Web Design

Web design is the process of developing web pages and websites.  It encompasses both the aesthetics of the page as well as the functionality for the end user.  Web design involves designing the layout, choosing the fonts, colors, images, sounds and video that are used on a page and more.

Custom vs. Template

When it comes to web design, there are two approaches—custom vs. template.  Custom design requires a web designer who has an educational (either self-taught or formally educated) background and professional experience in web design.  A custom approach offers greater flexibility, creativity and freedom in designing a website.  With a custom design, the sky is the limit.  However it requires expertise in web design and is generally reserved for professional web designers.

As the World Wide Web has increased in popularity, nearly all businesses today have developed websites, including small businesses and sole proprietors, many of which do not have the resources to hire professional web designers.  As a result, a variety of template products have come on the market that allow anyone, even those with no web design experience to create websites.  While these products let anyone create a website, they are based on template web pages that do not provide the level of freedom and flexibility a custom approach offers.

Careers in Web Design

As the use of the Internet and World Wide Web have increased, careers associated with them, including web design have exploded.  Most organizations have a web presence and need help creating and maintaining their websites.  As a result, there are a variety of different career paths a web designer can follow.

Because smaller organizations typically do not have large budgets for their web design needs, individuals who work for them usually have a more generalized role and are responsible for more aspects of the web design process than those who work for larger organizations.  Because larger companies usually have bigger budgets, web designers typically serve more specialized functions, focusing on only one or two areas of the design process.  Then there are individuals who work on a freelance or independent contractor basis, offering their services to many different organizations on a project by project basis.
