REASONS STUDENTS GET POOR GRADES
There are a number of possible reasons that students get poor grades. Some are external factors, such as the subject matter is too difficult, the teacher is hard to understand, and problems at home. Other reasons have to do with student attitudes, such as didn't do homework and goofed off in class. Finally, there are reasons related to personal issues, such as test anxiety and problems concentrating. If your child has been getting poor grades and you see the reason for it, you can try to rectify the situation and get back on the right track.

Description:
I don't want to clutter you with the many subjects that I CAN teach. I want to tell you about the subject I'm an expert at: SAT and ACT. I help high school students increase their scores so they can get into their schools of choice and get top scholarship money, which saves their parents potentially thousands on the cost of college. I've worked with one of the top tutoring companies in NYC who would charge $400/50minute session. I learned a lot from that experience and want to bring that to you at a much more affordable rate. My scores are ACT: 34/36 SAT: 2400/2400 superscore (My scores helped me get into Duke University, earn a full tuition scholarship to Colgate U and a Full-Ride (Tuition and Room&Board + free laptop) to The College of New Jersey) I've also received 800's on the Math IIc and Physics subject tests, and 11 perfect scores on Advanced Placement Exams, so I'm a test taking pro. In addition to this, I integrate valuable life lessons rarely taught or even mentioned in primary school and college that help students become more successful and balanced people in the real world. My students continually come back to me and thank me for showing them these quick and simple tools in stress management and productivity. I call it the Holistic Approach or Whole-Person Centered Tutoring. Get a FREE SAT & ACT consultation and learn why these tests offer the easiest way for juniors to get into college and the easiest way to get top scholarships! TRY ME RISK-FREE, too! If the student doesn't learn anything or doesn't feel I'm a good fit, you don't have to pay me! I'm physically based in Rochester, NY but with Skype have been tutoring online for the past year without a hitch. Learn more about the advantages of online tutoring.

Vocabulary
Dictionary.com defines vocabulary as “a list or collection of the words or phrases of a language, technical field, etc., usually arranged in alphabetical order and defined.” Acquiring vocabulary occurs over a lifetime. It begins when we’re born and continues as we get older. Infants and small children learn all of their vocabulary from interactions with adults and other children in their lives. As we get older and attend school our vocabulary expands through the formal education process.
Understanding Vocabulary Words
Building a broad vocabulary is critical for reading, learning and communicating. Without a shared vocabulary, it’s not possible to learn in school, read or interact with other people. When children start attending school, vocabulary becomes a part of their studies. There are many ways schools include vocabulary lessons in the curriculum, including:
- Word wall. Teachers create a bulletin board in their classroom where they post words students don’t know and teach them the meaning of the words throughout the year.
- Vocabulary lists. Students are often assigned a list of words to learn through rote memorization. This becomes more prevalent as students get older and are preparing for standardized exams.
- Study the word itself. Students learn to identify parts of the word such as the prefix or suffix and use the meaning of the different parts of the word to determine the meaning of the entire word.
- Context. Reading new words in a book, short story or other written work is a great way for students to learn vocabulary. Students use context clues to figure out the meaning of the word by themselves.
Learn How to Improve Vocabulary
Like learning any new skill, improving vocabulary works best when you use multiple techniques to expose yourself to new words and increase your vocabulary. Some examples of ways to broaden your vocabulary include:
- Flashcards. With flash cards, the vocabulary word is printed on one side and the meaning of the word is printed on the other. Flashcards can help you memorize new vocabulary words.
- Lists. Creating a vocabulary list can help you learn unfamiliar words. Every time you come across a word you don’t know the meaning of in your everyday life, write it down. Then look up the meaning of the word and write it down as well. Use the list to familiarize yourself with new words.
- Reading. Reading as much as you can is one of the best ways to improve vocabulary. Exposing yourself to different types and styles of writing will expose you to a variety of different words. Reading these words in the appropriate context can help you determine the meaning without having to consult a dictionary.
- Word games. Completing crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and amusing yourself with other word games is a fun way to learn the meanings of new words.
- Vocabulary tutor. If you need to expand your vocabulary quickly for a specific purpose, a tutor can provide a customized lesson plan to meet your needs.
