TOEFL

The TOEFL is an exam used to assess English language proficiency required to study at an English-speaking college or university.  The exam is accepted by 9,000 organizations in 130 countries around the world.  It is administered at thousands of sites in 165 countries.  It is available in both Internet and pen/paper formats, but most sites administer the computerized version.  There is no limit to the number of times a person can take the exam.

Exam Format

The exam is comprised of four parts—reading, listening, speaking and writing.  The reading section consists of 36-56 questions used to evaluate a candidate’s reading comprehension skills.  On the reading portion, examinees answer questions about passages they read.

The listening portion assesses an examinee’s ability to understand spoken English.  It contains 34-51 questions candidates are required to answer after listening to recorded lectures and conversations in English.

The speaking part of the exam is used to determine how well students speak in English.  There are six different assignments that require candidates to verbally respond to a series of questions.

The writing section contains two tasks that are used to measure how well candidates communicate in writing.

While each part of the exam focuses on one of the areas outlined above, each section requires examinees to use multiple skills necessary for English language proficiency.

TOEFL Scores

Each part of the exam is scored from 1-30 for a total possible score of 1-120.  Both automated and human scoring are used to judge the quality of the responses.  In addition to the scaled score, candidates also receive qualitative feedback about their performance.  The score report includes typical language capabilities of others who receive similar scores (e.g. writes grammatically correct sentences, verbally expresses thoughts in a cohesive manner).

There is no universal threshold for a passing score.  Every institution that requires the exam determines what score is necessary for acceptance to their program.  All scores are good for two years and are available online 10 days after the exam.  Score reports are mailed to candidates approximately two weeks after the exam.

TOEFL Preparation

As with any exam, preparation is critical for those who want to earn the best possible score.  There are many resources available to help people interested in taking the exam get ready for the test.  Examples include study guides, sample questions, practice exams and prep classes.  There are also resources available to help candidates enhance the skills on which they will be tested (i.e. reading, listening, speaking and writing).  For the most comprehensive and individualized preparation strategy, TOEFL tutors are available to help candidates prepare for the exam.
