Test Preparation
From the time they begin their formal education, students begin taking tests. As they progress through school, the number of tests they take increases, and the tests become more important. Eventually there will come a time when students will be required to take certain standardized exams if they want to continue their education. This typically occurs when students are preparing to begin their undergraduate education, graduate education, law school, medical school and more. At these times, test preparation becomes more important than ever.
Performance on exams like the SAT, MCAT, LSAT, GRE and GMAT play a critical role in determining whether or not students will get to continue their education and achieve their goals. To ensure they have the best chance of getting accepted into the program of their dreams, it is important for students to perform well on these exams. At times like these, students may seek out additional test preparation resources to help them maximize their scores.
Test Preparation Resources
Regardless of the exam for which you are studying, there are a variety of resources available to help you prepare. In general, these resources fall into the following categories:
- Study guides. These guides can take the form of either a book or a CD and typically include an overview of the information that will be covered, so you can brush up on material with which you may be unfamiliar. They also contain details about the test format, so you will be prepared on the day of the exam.
- Practice Questions. Practice questions are often included in study guides and other test prep materials. They give candidates a chance to practice answering the types of questions they will see on the exam. Answers to the questions and explanations about why a particular answer is correct and others are incorrect are provided.
- Practice Exams. These full length tests give candidates an opportunity to practice a complete exam from start to finish. It is a valuable tool that helps students learn how to pace themselves, and it gives them an idea of how long it will take to complete each section. Practice exams also provide a comprehensive overview of all of the material that will be presented.
- Group Prep Classes. Group courses provide a structured review of the material and are a good option for candidates who do not have the discipline or motivation for a self-paced review. Furthermore, collaborating with other students helps to reinforce the material and can motivate candidates to do their best.
- Test Preparation Tutors. A private tutor provides the most individualized approach to test preparation. In addition to providing a structured review of the information that will be on the exam, tutors develop lesson plans customized to the areas on which students need to focus the most.
Selecting the appropriate option depends on a number of factors, including a student’s budget, the amount of time they can dedicate to studying, their schedule, their learning style and how much of a refresher they think they need. With so many different resources available, it will be easy for students to find one that meets their needs.
