Description: Hi! My name is Tricia. I have a about 5 years of experience tutoring over 80 students from elementary to college age. I'm currently a practicing engineer at a medical device company and tutor in my free time. It's something I truly love to do, there's nothing better than witnessing the "light bulb" moment.

Through participating in a biomedical engineering curriculum, I learned to critically think about different subjects and how they relate to each other, which I use to tutor and help students understand. I also aim to instill critical thinking techniques when teaching, allowing students to move away from memorization and towards logical thinking and problem solving, which in turn helps them retain the information and score better on exams.

When tutoring I try to incorporate a comfortable and fun environment to promote learning. I feel that the more comfortable one is when learning, the more beneficial the lesson will be. I try to build my students' confidence in order for them to feel comfortable asking questions and communicating their weaknesses. In this way I try to direct my teaching to each student's learning style and learning rate. I also try to promote good organization and study techniques, which I feel are important in order to focus one's attention and provide for clearer thinking.

I am confident that my experience will be well suited for your goals. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I hope to hear from you soon and help you in your success!

SSAT

The Secondary School Admission Test or SSAT is a standardized exam used by officials at 900+ independent and private schools in the United States and Canada to help make admission decisions.  The exam is created and administered by the SSAT Board, a non-profit membership organization, dedicated to supporting the private school admission process.  There are three versions of the exam, administered to students in grades 3-11.  The SSAT Board began offering the elementary exam, administered to students in grades 3-4, during the 2012-2013 school year.   The middle exam is given to students in grades 5-7, and the upper exam is administered to students in grades 8-11.

Exam Sections

The elementary, middle and upper versions of the exam contain the following sections:

  • Verbal.  Tests students’ critical thinking, vocabulary and reasoning skills.
  • Reading.  Assesses examinees’ reading comprehension skills.
  • Quantitative.  Evaluates mathematical and problems solving skills.
  • Writing.  An un-scored section of the exam sent to the schools where candidates are applying.

In addition to the sections listed above, the middle and upper versions of the exam may also contain an un-scored, experimental section that is used to evaluate new exam questions.

Scoring

Scores for the exam range from 900-2400 and vary based on the level of the exam being taken.

  • The elementary exam has a potential maximum score of 1800, with scores of 300-600 possible on each section.
  • Middle school candidates can earn a score of 1320-2130, with scores of 440-710 possible on each section.
  • Scores on the upper version of the exam range from 1500-2400 with scores of 500-800 possible per section.

In addition to the scaled scores, students are also assigned a percentile value, so they can compare their performance to other students of the same gender in the same grade who have taken the exam in the last three years.

Students in grades 5-9 who take the exam are also given a national percentile score to help them compare their performance to other students nationally, including those who haven’t take the SSAT.  Finally, students in grades 7-10 are assigned a predictive SAT score, which gives them an idea of what score they can expect to earn when they take the SAT.

Taking the SSAT

The SSAT is offered on both standard and flex test days.  The standard version is offered eight times a year on the same day in a variety of locations in countries around the world.  There is no limit to the number of times students may take the exam when it is offered on a standard date.

The flex version of the exam is offered on any day the standard is not and is available multiple times a year.  It can be administered to a single student or group of students.  The flex version of the exam gives students a chance to take the SSAT even if they cannot take it on one of the standard test dates.  Students can only take one flex exam each year.

SSAT Prep

Students who plan to take the SSAT should study the subjects that will be covered and familiarize themselves with the format of the exam.  Study guides, practice exams and SSAT tutors can help students maximize their exam scores.
