Reading

Reading is a complex process where the brain converts what the eyes see on a page into meaningful content.  It is necessary for a variety of everyday tasks from being able to order off of a menu to understanding a contract.  Despite the fact that reading is an essential part of the formal education process, many people do not learn how to read and even more struggle with reading proficiency.

Learning to Read

The process of learning how to read typically begins at an early age when parents begin reading to their children.  When parents read to their children, it helps them acquire important language skills and build their vocabulary.  However, formal reading instruction does not typically begin until elementary school.  The reading process requires mastering a set of skills, each of which builds on the previous.  It begins with learning the letters of the alphabet and the sounds those letters make.  As individuals learn to recognize the letters and the sounds they make they are able to put the letters and sounds together to create words, sentences and paragraphs.

Importance of Reading

Once someone learns how to read, they can use their newfound skills for a variety of purposes.  It is how children learn in school, and it is how individuals of all ages communicate in writing.  Being able to read is essential for academic and professional success as well as many other tasks that are necessary in life, including being able to complete a job application, understand a contract when applying for an apartment or a mortgage, read a newspaper article and more.  Individuals who cannot read or have difficulty reading are at a disadvantage compared to those who can.  People who don’t learn to read struggle in school, which frequently leads to poor grades, low self-esteem, behavioral problems and more.

Get Reading Help

As with many things in life, early detection of reading problems is critical.  When difficulties are detected early, they are easier to resolve and the negative impact is often lessened than when they are allowed to continue unidentified and untreated.  However, regardless of an individual’s age, it is never too late to learn how to read or improve their reading skills.  There are a variety of resources available to help people of all ages learn how to read, including:

  • Software.  Reading software provides individuals an opportunity to improve their reading skills at their own pace.  These programs teach the basic skills necessary to read.
  • Workbooks.  These activities help test students’ knowledge of what they have learned and identify areas where they need to improve, so they can focus their efforts appropriately.
  • Community-based literacy programs.  These programs offer structured curriculums that help people learn how to read.  Instruction can take place in a small group or one-on-one setting.
  • Reading tutors.  Private tutors offer the most individualized and customized approach for people who are struggling to learn how to read.
