Literature
When you think of literature, you probably think of classic works like those written by Charles Dickens, Mark Twain or Jane Austen. But any written work is considered literature. Literature is usually divided into two broad categories—fiction and non-fiction. Fictional works are those derived from someone’s imagination and are not based on real events. Examples include novels, short stories, plays and more. Non-fictional works are based on factual information and include biographies, autobiographies, essays and any other work that is written about true events. Literature encompasses a variety of genres including, drama, comedy, philosophy, history, science and many more.
Literature Throughout Time
The earliest literary works were recorded around 1900 B.C. in ancient Babylonia. Many were derived from stories that had been passed down orally from generation to generation. As societies change over time, these changes are reflected in their literary works. Reading literature from different countries, cultures and time periods throughout history can provide valuable insight into what life was like at the time they were written, and how things have changed over time.
American Literature
In comparison to the earliest literary works, the origin of American literature is relatively recent, beginning in the colonial era in the 1600s. The first American novels weren’t published in the United States until the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. As American literature began to take shape, authors like Washington Irving, Ralph Waldo Emerson, David Thoreau and others strived to give American literature its own unique voice and style. Many American authors used their literary works as an outlet to explore a variety of sensitive subjects, including social issues, politics, philosophy, religion and more.
Studying Literature
All students in the United States study literature throughout their academic career. By the time they have completed their formal education, they have been exposed to a variety of literary works that span different genres, time periods and subject matter. Studying literature helps students build a variety of skills that are critical for success in academia and beyond, including reading comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, analytical reasoning and more.
Instructors often use literature to teach students about a variety of literary devices, including symbolism, metaphor, similes and many more. As students learn about these different techniques they can use them to enhance their own writing. As they are able to recognize the devices in other people’s work, they can use them to help identify the author’s true motivation/meaning in writing a story. Literary works can also be used to explore the issues of the time about which the author was writing.
Need Help?
As students study various works of literature in the classroom, they are inevitably evaluated on what they have read. These evaluations can take many forms including traditional exams, short essays, term papers and more. While studying literature can be a valuable academic exercise, many students struggle through the process. For those students who need a little extra help as they explore the written works of a particular era, genre or society, a literature tutor can help. A private tutor can provide individualized instruction to help students understand and critique what they are reading, so they can achieve academic success.
