The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an English language proficiency exam used by thousands of organizations in countries around the world as a measure of how well a person understands, speaks and writes English. The exam takes three hours to complete and is offered on 48 test dates each year at 800 testing facilities in 130 countries. There is no limit to the number of times a candidate may take the exam.
The IELTS offers two versions of the exam—general training and academic. Individuals who want to work or take part in a training program in an English-speaking country should take the general training form of the test, while those interested in studying at colleges or universities in English-speaking countries should take the academic version.
IELTS Format
Both the academic and general training versions of the exam are comprised of four parts, including listening, reading, writing and speaking. The listening and speaking portions are identical on both versions of the exam, but the reading and writing sections vary.
The listening section is approximately 30 minutes in length and contains 40 questions. Recordings are played for test-takers who are required to answer a series of questions about each recording they hear.
The reading portion of the exam consists of passages for students to read. After reading the passages, students are asked to answer 40 questions about what they have read. There are several different question types in this section, including multiple choice, sentence completion, short answer and more, and it takes about 60 minutes to complete.
The writing section consists of two essays and is 60 minutes long. One essay requires students to write about information that is presented visually. For the second essay, students have to answer the question presented and provide adequate support for their argument.
In the speaking portion, students participate in an 11-14 minute personal interview.
Students are required to take the listening, reading and writing sections on the same day. But at some testing centers, the speaking section does not have to be completed at the same time as the other three sections as long as it is completed within seven days of the exam date.
IELTS Scores
Students are assigned a minimum score of one and a maximum score of nine on each section of the exam as well as an overall exam score that combines the student’s results on each of the four sections. Scores are available approximately two weeks after the testing date.
Preparing for the IELTS
The IELTS has developed several resources designed to help students study for the exam, including an informational booklet, practice materials and sample test questions. Some of the materials are available in hard copy while others are available online. However, all of the resources help explain the exam to test candidates and give them an opportunity to become familiar with the format and the material that will be covered on the exam.
