Need a little homework help? Maybe you're having difficulties in one of your classes? Adult going back to school? Or possibly you just want to learn something new! Whatever your needs, I'm available to help. I would love to help you reach your potential. If I don't teach your subject, I'll help you find someone who does.

I've been a classroom educator for over 20 years. I taught classroom Music, Band, Choir, First Grade and Beginning Computer courses at the college level during this time. I began tutoring before I started my college studies in education. I have tutored Reading and Reading Comprehension, Math through Algebra, English/Grammar/Phonics, World History, Science, Study Skills, and have provided Homework Help.

My graduate degree is in Elementary Education and Reading. I enjoy teaching Reading at any level. I have previously taught Reading privately, in small groups, and in the classroom at the first grade level. As my undergraduate degree is in Music Education, I have also taught Flute, Piano and led Bands.

It is my belief that two of the most important academic subjects are Reading and Math. Reading in Kindergarten through Second Grade is primarily reading to learn to read and reading for pleasure. However, beginning around Third grade, reading is used to learn other subjects. Students are expected to begin reading textbooks and other material. If they are not strong in Reading, the other subjects will be very difficult. Of course we use Math everyday of our lives - and Reading! - and for that reason alone Math is important. However, I'm often asked why it's necessary to learn so much Math and learn more advanced Math that isn't always found in everyday life. One reason is "the more you know, the farther you can go!" When you limit the information you learn, you are limiting your possibilities for the future. Math is found in so many other subjects and careers - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Sculpture, Drawing, Music, Engineering - and the list goes on! Of course anything that uses the computer uses Math. Today, that's everywhere. Finally, using Math requires you to think logically and to use the skill in solving problems. It helps you be precise in thoughts and words.

Aside from reading, which is one of my favorite activities, I thoroughly enjoy water activities such as swimming, boating and white water rafting. In addition, I enjoy board games and card games. I frequently play poker online and watch televised games. And yes, I like puzzles. I like Word puzzles and Math puzzles. Sudoku puzzles can be a lot of fun and quite challenging.

Services INCLUDED in my hourly fee:
-INDIVIDUALIZED instruction
-Telephone assistance between lessons
-Communication with Teachers and Schools
-Communication with You
-A Learning Plan that is used to develop specific lesson goals

If you choose me as your tutor, you can expect 3 things of me: Prompt, Thorough, Prepared! In addition, you should expect that I will ask you to do work to be prepared for your lessons. I look forward to hearing from you so we can begin soon!

Handwriting

According to Merriam Webster, handwriting is “writing done by hand, especially the form of writing peculiar to a particular person.”  Handwriting is unique to every individual and cannot be duplicated by another person.  In fact, it is so unique that handwriting analysis is used in the legal system to authenticate documents.  In addition, because handwriting is so personal, many believe it can reveal a lot about an individual’s personality.

Learning How to Write

Handwriting is not a skill that can be acquired without formal instruction.  Handwriting is something that must be taught, and it takes time, practice and patience to learn how to write legibly.  Children typically begin learning handwriting at the preschool or kindergarten level.  But it can take years to learn how to write well.  Handwriting requires fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.  Because these skills develop at different rates in children, handwriting ability can vary widely among students.

Changes Over Time

While handwriting is still taught in school, the increased use of technology has led to a decrease in the importance placed on this skill.  As electronics play a larger role in our lives, handwritten documents are frequently being replaced by documents typed on a computer or “texted” via smart phone.  Instead of sending written thank you notes, people send emails.  Rather than writing rough drafts by hand, they are entered on a computer.  To-do lists that used to be written on scraps of paper are being typed directly into smart phone apps.  As a result, less time is dedicated to handwriting and more time is dedicated to computers.

While the role technology plays in our lives is likely to increase over time, learning how to write by hand is still necessary.  It is essential in academic settings, where pencil and paper assessments are routinely given, and it is critical to many facets of everyday life outside of the classroom as well.  Knowing how to write is necessary to sign checks, complete contracts, fill out forms and much more.

Get Handwriting Help

Handwriting is a skill that takes time to perfect.  However, even with proper instruction, many people experience difficulty forming letters correctly and writing legibly.  While it is possible that a person’s handwriting will get better on its own over time, it is more likely that without some type of intervention, poor handwriting will persist into adolescence and adulthood.

But there are ways individuals who struggle with handwriting can get the help they need.  Worksheets give students an opportunity to practice handwriting by tracing letters, numbers, words and punctuation.  Games and puzzles that require individuals to write down their answers are a fun way to practice handwriting without seeming like work.  For those who need extra help, a handwriting tutor can provide a customized plan designed with the student’s unique needs in mind to help improve their handwriting.
