Highly Experienced GMAT Tutor
City:Los Angeles

Rate:$60/hour

Levels:Adult Education, College / University

Subjects:GMAT

Description: I am a full-time, professional GMAT tutor. Since GMAT Prep is the only subject I offer, I consider myself an expert in the subject.

I can provide an entire course or act as a supplement to your current studies. Regardless of where you are in the process - whether you've already taken the exam and not yet reached your target score, taken a course but didn't learn as much as you thought you would, starting from square one or somewhere in between - I will position you to excel on test day.

Training includes:

practice strategy and planning;
diagnostics and weak area probing;
problem solving, reading comp, critical reasoning, and sentence correction strategies;
custom topic review and common tricky topics;
custom study guide for home review based on the principles you are having trouble with.

Working with me, you will learn how to approach every question type on both the math and verbal sections. Recent educational research shows that answering questions, as opposed to listening to lectures, dramatically increases retention of new knowledge. I train students to quickly recognize question types and break questions down into manageable steps. These methods go far beyond typical strategies such as picking numbers and plugging in answer choices. With my training, my students know exactly what to do with every question that shows up on the exam.

I am an experienced GMAT tutor. I know the intricacies and nuances of each exam and possess years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have raised scores tremendously. I enjoy helping others achieve their objectives. I am friendly, but at the same time I take the training very seriously. I like to work with motivated people. My style is efficient, direct, and effective.

Description: Hi! My name is Tricia. I have a about 5 years of experience tutoring over 80 students from elementary to college age. I'm currently a practicing engineer at a medical device company and tutor in my free time. It's something I truly love to do, there's nothing better than witnessing the "light bulb" moment.

Through participating in a biomedical engineering curriculum, I learned to critically think about different subjects and how they relate to each other, which I use to tutor and help students understand. I also aim to instill critical thinking techniques when teaching, allowing students to move away from memorization and towards logical thinking and problem solving, which in turn helps them retain the information and score better on exams.

When tutoring I try to incorporate a comfortable and fun environment to promote learning. I feel that the more comfortable one is when learning, the more beneficial the lesson will be. I try to build my students' confidence in order for them to feel comfortable asking questions and communicating their weaknesses. In this way I try to direct my teaching to each student's learning style and learning rate. I also try to promote good organization and study techniques, which I feel are important in order to focus one's attention and provide for clearer thinking.

I am confident that my experience will be well suited for your goals. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I hope to hear from you soon and help you in your success!

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

The GMAT is one of several requirements used by business schools around the world to make admission decisions.  The standardized exam measures applicants’ reading, writing, math and analytical skills.  It is used by admission officials to help determine if applicants will make good business school candidates.  The test is three and a half hours long and all GMAT scores are valid for five years.

GMAT Exam Structure

The exam consists of three sections, including:

  • Analytical writing.  This part of the test is comprised of two 30-minute essays designed to assess an applicant’s analytical skills and their ability to coherently and cohesively support an argument in writing.  General interest subjects are used as the basis for the essays, so no specialized knowledge is required.
  • Quantitative.  This section consists of multiple choice math questions designed to test an applicant’s knowledge of basic arithmetic, algebra and geometry.
  • Verbal.  This portion of the exam contains multiple choice questions that assess examinees’ reading comprehension, reasoning, grammar and usage skills.

GMAT Test Administration

All GMAT exams are administered on a computer.  There is no paper and pencil version of the test.  In the multiple choice sections, questions are presented to the examinee one at a time.  Students cannot skip questions or proceed to the next question until they answer the one they’ve been given.  After choosing a response, the next question will appear on the computer screen to be answered.  This will continue until all of the questions in a particular section have been answered.

Generally, if the respondent answers a question correctly, the next question will be more difficult.  If the respondent answers incorrectly, the next question will be easier.  Because each question is scored as it is answered, students cannot go back and change their answers.

Scoring

Each section of the exam is assigned a scaled score that ranges from 200-800 based on the total number of questions answered, the difficulty of the questions and how many were answered correctly.  A penalty is assigned to students who do not complete the exam.

In addition to the scaled score, a percentile value is also assigned to each section.  This value is designed to let students know how they performed in comparison to others who took the exam.  For example, if a student earns a score in the 90th percentile on the quantitative section of the test, they scored higher than 90 percent of the people who took the exam.

Preparing for the GMAT

Because the GMAT is a key component in the business school admission process, it’s important that anyone who is planning to take the exam prepare appropriately.  There are a variety of materials and courses available to help students maximize their scores on the GMAT, including test preparation software, study guides, group prep classes and GMAT tutors.  With so many options available, examinees can choose the one that best suits their needs.
