Economics

According to www.whatiseconomics.org, “economics is the study of the production and consumption of goods and the transfer of wealth to produce and obtain those goods.  Economics explains how people interact within markets to get what they want or accomplish certain goals.  ”The study of economics consists of two general categories:  microeconomics and macroeconomics.

Microeconomics explores individual components of an economy, such as the people, businesses or a single market and the interaction between them.  It seeks to explain behavior.  Some of the key concepts studied in microeconomics include:
  • Supply.  How much of a good or service is available at a particular price point.
  • Demand.  How much of a good or service individuals within an economy are willing to buy at a particular price point.
  • Microeconomics studies the relationship of supply and demand and its impact on pricing.  If demand increases, but supply doesn’t, the price of a good or service will increase.  If demand decreases, but supply doesn’t, the price will decrease.  If demand stays the same and supply increases, the price will decrease.  If demand stays the same and supply decreases, the price will increase.
  • Market equilibrium is achieved when supply equals demand.
  • Opportunity Cost.  The idea that individuals have to give up something when they purchase a good or service.  Opportunity cost can be another good or service, time, an event or just about anything someone has to sacrifice to make a purchase.  For example, if a person chooses to buy a laptop, they may decide not to buy a smart phone or other electronic device because they can’t afford it.  The goods they choose not to buy represent the opportunity cost of purchasing the laptop.

The study of macroeconomics focuses on the production and consumption of entire economies and the impact of those economies on the world.  Key elements of macroeconomics include:
  • Unemployment.  The number of people actively looking for work who cannot find a job.  The unemployment rate doesn’t include people who voluntarily don’t work, retirees, or individuals who have become discouraged with their job search and are no longer actively looking for a job.
  • Inflation.  The increase in the cost of goods and services over time.
  • Monetary Policy.  Government policies such as interest rates that affect the money supply.
  • Fiscal Policy.  The way taxes and government spending impact the economy as a whole.

Learn About Economics

Students who study economics at the collegiate level will find a thought-provoking and challenging curriculum.  Economics programs teach math, analytical and problem solving skills.  Students also learn how to evaluate and interpret data, and they are expected to have excellent written and oral communications skills to present their findings.  With such a rigorous curriculum, some students find they need the help of an economics tutor to assist with their coursework from time to time.

A Career in Economics

With a broad education focusing on a wide range of skills that can be applied to many different jobs, economics students have a variety of career choices after graduation, including:
  • Teaching.  Students who graduate with a degree in economics can teach at the collegiate level.  Some programs require teachers to have a master’s degree, while others require a doctorate.
  • Private industry.  Economics majors who work in private industry are qualified to predict consumer behavior and how external macroeconomic factors will influence the business.
  • Government.  Many economics graduates work for the government, studying factors that influence the overall economy, including unemployment, inflation, interest rates and more.
  • Law.  Lawyers are often required to determine the value of client losses like medical expenses, lost wages, damages and more.  An economics background prepares them for this type of work.
