Career Development

According to BusinessDictionary.com, career development is “the lifelong process of managing your or your employee's work experience within or between organizations.”  It begins with choosing an educational or vocational path and doesn’t end until the individual leaves the work force.  Choosing a career is a personal decision everyone has to make for themselves.  However, there are certain components that comprise the career development process no matter what path you choose.

Find Out What Interests You

To choose the career path that is right for you, it is important to identify areas that interest you.  Whether you’re still preparing for your first job or you’re interested in making a change from your current one, there are many ways you can learn about different career opportunities, including:

  • Classes.  Coursework gives you an opportunity to explore different career options in a formal classroom setting.
  • Part-Time Job.  If you are already working full-time, you can get a part-time job in the evenings or on the weekends.  If you are a student, summer jobs are a good way to gain real life experience in a particular field.
  • Volunteer Your Time.  Volunteering lets you gain practical experience without investing a lot of time or money.  Volunteers often have responsibilities that are similar to paid employees, giving you a chance to find out firsthand if a particular opportunity is right for you.

Start Your Career

Before starting your career, it is important to identify the qualifications you need to obtain to secure a job in that field.  You may need educational credentials (e.g. certificate program, undergraduate degree, graduate degree, etc.) vocational training or some other type of qualification.  If you don’t meet the necessary requirements, you may not be able to get a job.  Identifying the necessary criteria gives you an opportunity to plan and acquire the education you need to successfully obtain a job in a particular field.

Advancing Your Career

After you get a job, you can’t assume you will automatically advance within your field.  It is a good idea to take some time and learn what it takes to move your career forward, so you can prepare accordingly.  Talk to your boss, HR representative or co-workers.  Use the information you find to develop a plan that will get you to the next step in your career.

Changing Careers

After entering a particular field, you may decide that rather than advancing, you want to make a change.  Before you do, get any additional education and training you need.  While you will most likely require additional skills, many of the skills you have already cultivated throughout your career like communication skills, leadership skills, interpersonal skills, etc. are transferrable no matter what career you choose.

Get Help With Career Development

If you need career development help, there are a variety of resources available.  Many colleges and universities have centers on campus that help students evaluate their skills, identify their interests and determine what career choices are best for them.  In addition, there are non-profit organizations dedicated to helping professionals identify and achieve their career goals.  Furthermore, career development tutors and career counselors are available to help students and professionals create a plan that is tailored to their unique needs.
