Summer Activities for Kids

November 16, 2015

Article lists four fun summer activities for kids.

When school ends and summer begins many kids and their parents are left wondering what to do with all of their free time.  Sure, it’s great to kick back and relax after a hard year of studying for exams, preparing daily homework assignments, writing papers and toiling away over projects. But after a few weeks, many students find themselves plagued by boredom with too much time on their hands and parents are left wondering how to help.  It doesn’t have to be that way.  There are many different ways students can spend their summer days that don’t involve sitting on a couch and watching TV or playing video games.  Here is a list of four fun summer activities for kids.  Choose one or more this summer.

Library

Whether your child is a preschooler or high school student, the library has a variety of resources they can take advantage of during the summer and all year long.  From story time, arts and crafts, musical activities and summer reading programs for young kids to book clubs, game and movie nights and guest speakers for older children, the library has something for everyone.  It’s a great way to beat the heat on days you don’t want to be outside.

Camp

If you’re looking for longer-term summer activities for kids, camp is a great choice.  Summer camp provides a fun learning environment for kids, improves social skills, builds confidence and promotes physical fitness.  There are countless options available, including academic, sports, technology, science and nature, arts and crafts, drama and many more.  Some camps take place during the day, while others house kids overnight.  Some last only a few days, while others last for several weeks or the entire summer.  The key to finding the right camp for your child is choosing one that fits their interests and is an appropriate length based on their age and comfort level.

Volunteering

With so many different summer activities for kids, it’s easy to overlook volunteering as a viable option.  Many schools incorporate community service requirements into their curriculum during the school year, but that doesn’t mean the volunteering has to end when school does. Volunteering is a great way for kids to give back to their community.  It teaches responsibility and shows them they can make a difference in the lives of others.  If your kids have started thinking about college and future job prospects, it is also a great way to find out whether a particular career path might be right for them.

Job

If your kids are old enough, a summer job is a great way for them to spend their days.  Jobs foster independence, teach children to be accountable for their actions and help them develop marketable skills they can use in the future.  Because they will be earning their own spending money, they’ll learn the value of a dollar and won’t have to rely on you whenever they want to buy something.
