Five Effective Time Management Techniques

Learn about five effective techniques to help you manage your time

If it seems like there’s never quite enough time to do everything you need to do, you’re not alone.  In addition to completing daily homework assignments and studying for exams, you probably also participate in extracurricular activities and have responsibilities at home.  With so many activities that require your time and attention, it can be difficult to manage all of the tasks you need to complete.  But, a few simple time management techniques can help ensure you get everything done in a timely manner.


Get Organized

When you have a lot to accomplish, it’s easy to forget about some of the tasks you need to complete.  To stay on track, you need to come up with a system that will keep you organized.  A good place to start is by writing down everything you need to do, including homework assignments, exams, extracurricular activities, chores and anything else that requires your time.  You can create a “to do” list, use a daily planner or create a monthly calendar.  It’s up to you.  Keeping track of everything in writing will ensure you don’t forget anything.

But staying organized doesn’t just mean keeping track of all of your activities, it means keeping your work space organized as well.  It’s hard to complete your homework assignments or study for that exam if you can’t find the materials you need to do so.  One way to keep your workspace neat is to set up a simple filing system.  Keep uncompleted assignments in one file and completed assignments in another.  By doing so, you will always know where to find the materials you need to complete your schoolwork.


Plan Ahead

It’s not enough just to plan for today and tomorrow.  Knowing what you have coming up in the next few weeks will help you plan accordingly, so you can get everything done on time.  When you have a larger scale project to complete, don’t wait until the last minute to begin.  Instead, work on it a little bit at a time, so you don’t get overwhelmed or miss a deadline.


Make a Schedule

After you have written down everything you need to do and have a list of all of your upcoming activities, it’s time to make a schedule.  Your schedule should include all of your tasks and the days on which you will complete them as well as blocks of time for each based on how long you think each one will take.  In addition, you should schedule some down time to help you recharge your batteries.


Don’t Try to Do Too Much

Be realistic when you’re making your schedule.  Don’t try to cram too many tasks into an unrealistic amount of time.  If you do so, you’re setting yourself up to fail.  Instead, plan ahead and allow enough time to complete each task properly.  This will help decrease stress and increase your chances of being successful.


Eliminate Distractions

When it’s time to do your work, eliminate all distractions before you begin.  By removing distractions such as the TV, phone and anything else that can derail you from achieving your goals, you will be more likely to complete your tasks on time.
