Back to School Checklist

February 15, 2016

A back to school checklist provides parents and students with a list of activities to complete before the first day of school.

It’s that time of year again.  The time when parents and students count down the days until school starts.  With a new school year just around the corner, there are many things to do to get ready.  Here’s a back to school checklist to help you make sure you and your child are prepared for the first day.  It includes some of the most common activities you need to take care of before school starts.

Medical Paperwork

Most schools require students to submit medical paperwork at or before the start of the school year.  The school needs information about your child’s general physical health, allergies, disabilities and any condition or illness that could impact your child’s ability to learn.  If your child plays sports, there may be additional requirements.  Without the required paperwork, your child may not be able to start school.

School Supplies

Next up on the back to school checklist are school supplies.  Although the list seems to grow each year, your child needs everything on it to succeed.  From pens and pencils to binders and notebooks, the list includes the items your child needs to complete their school work on a daily basis.  Most schools send a home a list of supplies during the summer, but your child may receive additional requirements from individual teachers when school starts.

School Clothes

Fashion may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about preparing for a new school year.  But it’s one of the things that should be on your back to school checklist.  Some schools (particularly private and parochial) require students to wear a uniform, while others permit students to wear street clothes.  Either way, your child needs an appropriate wardrobe for the school year.  Be sure whatever you buy adheres to the school’s dress code or your child may be sent home to change.

Sports Equipment

If your child plays sports, they need an extra set of clothes for practice and whatever equipment is required for the sports they play.  Your child’s school may provide some of the equipment.  Check with the school to find out what they provide and what you need to buy.

The next item on the back to school checklist is deciding how your child will get to and from school.  Whether they take the bus, you drop them off and pick them up or you make other arrangements, establish a schedule and stick to it.  If your child takes the bus, you should receive information from the school about where and when the bus will arrive.  If your child doesn’t take a bus, decide who will pick them up and drop them off and when.

Before and After School Care

If your child needs before and/or after school care, now is the time to make those arrangements.  Decide who will watch your kids as well as what time you can drop them off and pick them up.  Then adjust your schedule accordingly and make sure you’re on time.  Many daycare centers have additional fees for children who are dropped off earlier or picked up later than agreed.
