Description:
I am a certified teacher with the state of Texas. I'm a graduate of Texas A&M University. My teaching resume includes being a private school teacher in Colorado, public school teacher in New Mexico,a full time home schooling parent, and I've been a local private tutor for 7 years. I specialize in middle school math. My practice focuses primarily upon 7th grade General Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1. Often times it's not the material that needs to be changed but rather the approach. I come with very high recommendations. All private tutor sessions will be taught through the platform of ZOOM. I love what I do and operate with the highest of integrity. If you would like more info I can send you a link to my website.

When Stephen tutors, he utilizes Vygotsky's scaffolding method, as well as the "Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)" method, to ensure maximum effectiveness in learning. He also uses the theory of Bloom's Taxonomy to hone in on the learning style of the student in order to maximize the effects of study. Stephen continually encourages an excitement in learning, and demonstrates this excitement as he tutors.
Stephen's tutoring philosophy: "My job is not to be the expert. My job is to condition the student to be the expert."

Need a little homework help? Maybe you're having difficulties in one of your classes? Adult going back to school? Or possibly you just want to learn something new! Whatever your needs, I'm available to help. I would love to help you reach your potential. If I don't teach your subject, I'll help you find someone who does.
I've been a classroom educator for over 20 years. I taught classroom Music, Band, Choir, First Grade and Beginning Computer courses at the college level during this time. I began tutoring before I started my college studies in education. I have tutored Reading and Reading Comprehension, Math through Algebra, English/Grammar/Phonics, World History, Science, Study Skills, and have provided Homework Help.
My graduate degree is in Elementary Education and Reading. I enjoy teaching Reading at any level. I have previously taught Reading privately, in small groups, and in the classroom at the first grade level. As my undergraduate degree is in Music Education, I have also taught Flute, Piano and led Bands.
It is my belief that two of the most important academic subjects are Reading and Math. Reading in Kindergarten through Second Grade is primarily reading to learn to read and reading for pleasure. However, beginning around Third grade, reading is used to learn other subjects. Students are expected to begin reading textbooks and other material. If they are not strong in Reading, the other subjects will be very difficult. Of course we use Math everyday of our lives - and Reading! - and for that reason alone Math is important. However, I'm often asked why it's necessary to learn so much Math and learn more advanced Math that isn't always found in everyday life. One reason is "the more you know, the farther you can go!" When you limit the information you learn, you are limiting your possibilities for the future. Math is found in so many other subjects and careers - Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, Sculpture, Drawing, Music, Engineering - and the list goes on! Of course anything that uses the computer uses Math. Today, that's everywhere. Finally, using Math requires you to think logically and to use the skill in solving problems. It helps you be precise in thoughts and words.
Aside from reading, which is one of my favorite activities, I thoroughly enjoy water activities such as swimming, boating and white water rafting. In addition, I enjoy board games and card games. I frequently play poker online and watch televised games. And yes, I like puzzles. I like Word puzzles and Math puzzles. Sudoku puzzles can be a lot of fun and quite challenging.
