AP Exams
AP exams are comprehensive college level exams that give high school students an opportunity to earn college credit based on their knowledge of a particular subject. There are currently 34 AP exams administered that test students’ knowledge of foreign languages; math and science; and history and social sciences.
Choosing the Right AP Courses
To help students prepare for AP exams, many high schools offer AP courses that provide an in-depth study of the topics covered on the corresponding exam. Although there are 34 AP courses available, they may not be offered in all high schools. Students who are interested in enrolling in an AP course should talk to the faculty and administration at their school to find out what if any courses are offered. Speaking with teachers can help students develop realistic expectations about the workload for each class and make an informed decision about the courses that are right for them.
Taking the Exam
AP exams are offered once a year in May. Students can take the tests each time they are offered even if they have previously taken the exam. They are not required to take an AP course in order to take the exam. However, taking AP classes helps students prepare for the exams and maximize their scores. Homeschooled students and students who go to schools that do not offer AP courses can take the exams at schools that do offer AP classes.
AP Exam Scores
Exam scores are distributed in July after the test date. Score reports include the scores from every AP exam the student has ever taken unless they specifically request that a score not be reported.
Multiple choice sections are scored based on the number of correct responses, while essay questions are scored by college professors and AP teachers based on the quality of the response. Performance on the multiple choice sections is combined with performance on the essay questions to get a composite score which is then converted to an AP score of 1 (low) to 5 (high).
Earning College Credit
There is no universal standard for awarding college credit based on exam performance. The score that must be earned to receive credit is determined by each individual college or university. For example, University A may award three undergraduate credits for a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP U.S. history exam, while University B will only award credit to students who earn a 5.
Preparing for an AP Exam
As with any test, it is important to prepare for an AP exam. There are a variety of materials available to help students maximize their scores, including sample multiple choice and essay questions from previous exams and subject matter study guides. Furthermore, the College Board publishes test-taking tips based on the exam subject, so students can focus their studying efforts. For those who need additional help, AP exam tutors can provide an in-depth review of the material that will be covered on the exam.
Benefits of Earning AP Credit
While taking rigorous AP courses and studying for the exams can be challenging, there are many benefits associated with earning AP credits. Students who earn college credits because of their AP performance often do not have to take entry level pre-requisite courses required of most incoming freshmen, giving them more freedom to take courses they are interested in. Furthermore, with additional credits, students may be able to add a minor to their studies, pursue a double major or graduate early.
