Find an ACT Tutor
ACT
The ACT is a college admission exam accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the United States. The test measures students’ knowledge of subjects they are learning in high school, including English, reading, math, science and writing. The ACT is offered six times a year in the United States, U.S. territories, Puerto Rico and Canada. Students may take the test up to 12 times.
Test Structure
There are two versions of the exam—the ACT and the ACT Plus Writing. Both versions consist of four subject tests in English, reading, math and science with a total of 215 multiple choice questions. The ACT Plus Writing also has a 30-minute writing assignment.
- English. The English section contains 75 questions and evaluates students’ knowledge of effective writing skills, including proper use of punctuation, sentence structure, organization of ideas and more.
- Math. The math portion of the exam consists of 60 questions. It tests students’ knowledge of basic mathematical concepts taught in high school, including pre-algebra, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
- Reading. The reading portion has 40 questions and tests reading comprehension skills. Students read passages and answer questions about the information presented. They are also asked to draw conclusions based on the information given.
- Science. The science section contains 40 questions and measures skills that are necessary for scientific study, such as interpretation of data and problem solving.
- Writing. Students who take the ACT Plus Writing exam must complete a 30-minute writing assignment that evaluates their writing skills to make sure they are at a level appropriate for an entry-level, college freshman.
Scores
A composite score of 1-36 is given for the English, math, reading and science sections. Scores for the multiple choice sections are based on the number of correct answers. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers. When applicable, the writing section is scored by two readers who each assign a value of 1-6 for a total possible score ranging from 2-12. In addition to your individual score, you will see national ranks which show you how your score compares to that of your peers.
In general, you can view your multiple choice scores online about two and a half weeks after the exam, and writing scores are available approximately two weeks after that. If you take the exam more than once, you get to choose which scores are sent to the colleges where you are applying. Only one set of scores is sent per report.
Preparing for the ACT
Because the ACT tests students on what they are already learning in school, the best way to prepare for the exam is to do well in class. But even the brightest students should practice for the exam and familiarize themselves with the instructions and format before the day of the test. There are many resources available to help students prepare for the ACT including study guides, sample questions and practice exams. For students who need a more structured review or individualized help preparing for the exam, group prep classes and private ACT tutors can help.
